We began a Study June 1st of German Lutheran Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "The Cost of Discipleship", written from his place of ministry and martyrdom, Germany, in 1937.
Books are provided, don't worry about joining late - each week stands on its own or we review what we need to.

Two famous quotes from the book:  "When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die."  And, "Above all, Grace is costly because it cost God the life of his Son... and what has cost
God much cannot be cheap for us."

Week 1...

An overview of Dietrich Bonhoeffer himself and his opposition to the German National Socialist (Nazi) movement and eventual Government.

Week 2

We studied "Cheap Grace" - a well known term coined by Pastor Bonhoeffer in this book.  Cheap Grace is (1) Accepting the message of the Gospel intellectually but not letting it change the heart and being delivered from sin, (2) When the Christian is content to model him/herself after the world's standards, (3) lack of sanctification, (4) baptism without Church-discipline, (5) communion without confession, (6) absolution without personal confession, (7) Grace without discipleship, (8) Grace without the Cross, (9) Grace without fellowship with The Living Christ.  Yet, we also correctly and faithfully proclaim that Grace is not works as is well defined in Romans 11:6.  (Pages 43-44 book)

Week 3

We studied "Costly Grace", the essence of which is that discipleship is costly because it costs us "our life" - certainly in wants and desires and in the ultimate case our physical life literally - yet discipleship is also Grace because our Master is the gentle and ever-forgiving Jesus Christ.  Our example is the Apostle Peter.  His Grace was costly - it did cost him his physical life and worldly comforts, but it remained Grace, because Peter could never out-sin and out-fail the Call of Jesus, "Follow Me."  See Mark 1:17, Luke 5:1-20, John 21:19. Bonhoeffer points out that Martin Luther found the same "Costly Grace."  (Pages 45-53 book)
